i wouldn’t have ever picked this up if it weren’t a book club pick since i know this type of YA just isn’t for me anymore, but i had a decent enough time with it. i do like that it shows a perspective that isn’t always typical in queer teen books. a pretty solid story all around, cute and cheesy yet also touching on some darker topics in a sensitive and age-appropriate way.

Adorable, funny, and touching as it approaches very dramatic and traumatic experiences. Loved it.
Yamilet, a Mexican-American girl, as been outed as a lesbian by her best friend, but thankfully due to some violence problems her brother has been forced to go to a private catholic high school and she worked hard so she could join him, protect him and get away from the old friends and school where her secret is not a secret anymore. No one knows her there and she’s hoping to keep her sexuality a secret. But, the first person to truly befriend that is not a racist, Bo, is gay and perfect, a girl that doesn’t let people walk over her.
Things get complicated and Yami starts to feel the need to come out, but she fears her catholic mother’s bias towards gay people, and her father and confidant has been deported back to Mexico a few years back. She hopes he will be able to be the first she come out too.
Her brother is hiding a lot and distracted by work and Bo, she doesn’t notice the changes and secrets.
As things progress so much is going to be revealed that upturns what Yami knew and how she saw life and what is happening around her.
I loved Yami’s voice, her brave and hardworking nature, the love she has for her brother, and the care for everyone she loves.
As I said before the book deals with some hard issues so check the trigger warnings, however they’re not heavily dug into, and it’s still a pretty endearing and light read, for the issues it deals with.
Super recommend it.

I loved this book. I immediately knew that I wanted Yami to be with Bo when they met. They were so cute together even though Yami was insisting on pretending to be straight. She gave me so much send-hand embarrassment and I loved it so much because she was so funny.
I loved the journey that Yami went through. I loved that she wasn't ashamed to be gay, she was only concerned about being kicked out. And the contrast from her feelings about her queerness to her brother's feelings toward his own queerness was so surprising. His story was also so compelling and I wondered if going to the catholic school was what triggered his shame or if he was ashamed of himself before that? I think this book could have worked well from either of their perspectives and I wouldn't mind another one from Ceasar's just to get his side of the events as well.
That being said, I loved that Yami went from pretending to be straight to being out and proud in front of the whole school with her girlfriend. I also loved that her struggle dealt with the very real possibility of being kicked out, which is something that young queer people have to consider every day. It was a nice change from the standard coming-out story which usually doesn't go this in depth with that side of coming out.

This book is beautiful inside and out 🩷💛 The pace was a little slow at times, but I really liked the story overall and how themes like being a queer kid in not very open environment, being a person of color in a predominantly white school, mental health, family issues and self-identity were handled.
