I don’t really feel capable of giving a proper, detailed review of this book because I am simply in awe of it. Just know that it is a perfect book about queerness, lesbians pining for each other, a gorgeous sibling relationship, celebrating every part of who you are, complicated families, mental health, the trauma of religious bigotry, being Brown and queer in a majority allocishet white space, forced separation from family, relearning to trust, rebonding with loved ones, simple and massive moments of joy, and ultimately, hope. I loved reading every second of it.

My favourite quote was: “I can’t make him love himself. The closest I can get is loving myself unapologetically right in front of him.”

This was a great book!

It has some serious aspects, like discussions and scenes about religious trauma, deportation, racism, homophobia, outings, depression and attempted suicide.

It also had a lot of funny and cute moments, too. It has the beard trope where the “straight” character fake dates the queer character’s partner to avoid coming out.

I loved the different discussions that Bo and Yamilet about their heritage, since Bo is Asian and Yami is Mexican American.

And now I need to rewatch and listen to Selena.

What a frank but hopeful portrayal of being a young, queer POC. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and fun read but it did not shy away from the reality of how tough coming out can be. I would love to see this adapted into a Netflix movie. 4 solid stars.

Pay attention to the trigger warnings on this one, the content for them isn't light.

I struggled with this one because of them but also, this felt clunky and messy to me. (
