In the context of the author's actions, some parts are genuinely concerning and a major turn off.
Having read it without notion of this was however 'enjoyable' and the meaning I took from it was a severely flawed character given his circumstances (and not the self insert it actually is).

I had a hard time with this book.
Not due to its hard topics or sometimes graphic descriptions, but due to its repetitiveness and to it being way over detailed.
I mean, almost an entire chapter where Winston read a book about stuff that we already know just in more detail, which added nothing to the plot! Sure, him reading the book is very important, but an entire chapter is useless and exhausting.
And there were parts during O'Brien's torture of him that were just long, repetitive monologues that got tired very quickly.
That being said, the way George Orwell writes, the way he makes you feel all the emotions that the character feel is genius and made me not want to put the book down.
As repetitive as it was, it was also fascinating and most of all important.
It has such a strong message, it's heartbreaking, it's devestating, and it's as genius as it is exhausting.
Despite the amount of stars I would definitely recommend it.

Για δεύτερη φορά, ο Όργουελ κατάφερε να με αφήσει σοκαρισμένη. Το 1984 είναι ένα βιβλίο που γράφτηκε το 1949 κι όμως, δεν απέχει πολύ από την πραγματικότητα. Ο Όργουελ καταφέρνει πάλι να είναι επίκαιρος, παρόλο που το έργο του γράφτηκε τόσα χρόνια πριν.
Στο βιβλίο η Ωκεανία βρίσκεται κάτω από το καθεστώς του Μεγάλου Αδελφού, την προσωποποίηση του Κόμματος, του μόνου αλάθητου μηχανισμού. Ο Όργουελ σκιαγράφησε λεπτομερώς μία κοινωνία του 1984, όπου οι άνθρωποι ζουν κάτω από ένα τρομοκρατικό και δικτατορικό καθεστώς. Το μεγαλύτερο αμάρτημα είναι το έγκλημα της σκέψης, το παρελθόν δέχεται συνεχείς τροποποιήσεις, η γλώσσα αλλάζει με σκοπό η ομιλία να είναι ανεξάρτητη από τη σκέψη ενώ οι πολίτες ζουν μέσα στην προπαγάνδα, αποβάλλοντας κάθε συναίσθημα από πάνω τους, πέρα από την αγάπη, τον φόβο και τη λατρεία τους για τον Μεγάλο Αδελφό.
Διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο και βλέποντας πώς ζούσαν οι άνθρωποι στην Ωκεάνια, δε μπορούσα παρά να νιώσω φρίκη και θυμό. Μου ήταν δύσκολο να χωνέψω τους κανόνες που επέβαλλε το Κόμμα στους πολίτες και την πλύση εγκεφάλου την οποία έκανε. Η σκηνή με τα "δύο λεπτά μίσους" είναι μία από τις σκηνές του βιβλίου που με έκαναν να αισθανθώ φρίκη και να συνειδητοποιήσω πόσο εύκολο είναι να χειραγωγηθούν οι άνθρωποι. Το βιβλίο περιέχει πολλά στοιχεία τα οποία ακόμη και σήμερα εξακολουθούν να είναι επίκαιρα και κάνοντας τη συσχέτιση, σοκαρίστηκα ακόμη παραπάνω.
Ο πρωταγωνιστής Γουίνστον Σμιθ ήταν ο πιο ενδιαφέρον χαρακτήρας για εμένα. Σε μια κοινωνία όπου προσπαθεί να εξαλείψει την σκέψη, το να βλέπω ότι υπήρχε κάποιος ο οποίος αμφισβητούσε αυτά που έλεγε το Κόμμα και που ήθελε να μάθει την αλήθεια, παραμένοντας ένας από τους λίγους "ανθρώπους" ήταν κάτι που με έκανε να νιώθω αισιοδοξία. Δεν είναι συμπαθητικός (όπως και οι υπόλοιποι χαρακτήρες, κατά τη δική μου άποψη), αλλά σε μία κοινωνία όπου οι άνθρωποι δε μπορούν να νιώσουν σχεδόν κανένα συναίσθημα και των οποίων οι απόψεις τους έχουν διαβρωθεί εξαιτίας του Κόμματος, είναι απόλυτα λογικό. Για αυτά που πρεσβεύει ο κάθε χαρακτήρας, θεωρώ ότι ήταν γραμμένοι ακριβώς όπως ταίριαζε με το όλο θέμα του βιβλίου.
Η γραφή ήταν πυκνή και με αμεσότητα παρουσίαζε την κατάσταση που επικρατούσε στην Ωκεάνια. Όσο περισσότερο διάβαζα, τόσο περισσότερα μάθαινα για την κοινωνία και για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο το Κόμμα ασκούσε την εξουσία του. Το τρομοκρατικό και σκοτεινό κλίμα που επικρατούσε στο βιβλίο με έκανε να αισθάνομαι τρόμο και φρίκη ενώ η λεπτομερής περιγραφή του τρόπου ζωής των ανθρώπων μού έδινε την εντύπωση ότι βρισκόμουν εγώ η ίδια στην Ωκεάνια. Πολλές φορές μου ερχόταν να ουρλιάξω από αγανάκτηση βλέποντας την ανικανότητα των ανθρώπων να δουν την αλήθεια και να ανακτήσουν την ανεξαρτησία τους, παρόλο που ήξερα ότι κάτι τέτοιο θα ήταν σχεδόν αδύνατο εξαιτίας της επιρροής του Κόμματος.
Στο τρίτο μέρος του βιβλίου η πλοκή κορυφώνεται ακόμη περισσότερο, ειδικά στα τελευταία κεφάλαια. Καθώς τα διάβαζα, αισθανόμουν σαν να έχανα σιγά σιγά το μυαλό μου και αρκετές φορές αισθανόμουν άρρωστη, εξαιτίας των γεγονότων που εκτυλίσσονταν στα τελευταία κεφάλαια Τα βασανιστήρια τα οποία υπέστη ο Γουίνστον περιγράφονταν στο βιβλίο με τόσο λεπτομερή και ψυχοφθόρο τρόπο, που αισθανόμουν σαν να με έπιασε κόμπος στο στομάχι. Όταν έφτασα στο τέλος, μού ήταν δύσκολο να συνειδητοποιήσω ότι αυτός ήταν ο τρόπος με τον οποίο ολοκληρωνόταν το βιβλίο, παρόλο που ήξερα ότι δε μπορούσε να τελειώσει διαφορετικά.
Μου ήταν κάπως δύσκολο να διαβάζω κάποιες προβληματικές σκέψεις ή απόψεις του Γουίνστον όπως όταν σκεφτόταν ότι ήθελε να βιάσει τη Τζούλια (Τη βίαζε και στην κορύφωση της ηδονής, της έκοβε το λαρύγγι και υπήρχαν μερικά σημεία στο βιβλίο που μου φάνηκαν προβληματικά ή μισογυνιστικά. Για παράδειγμα, δε μου άρεσε ο τρόπος με τον οποίο το βιβλίο αναφερόταν στις πόρνες καθώς ήταν πολύ υποτιμητικός ενώ οι γυναίκες αντιμετωπίζονταν με κατώτερο τρόπο από τους άντρες (καταλαβαίνω ότι το Κόμμα ευθυνόταν για αυτό, αλλά και πάλι ήταν άβολο να το διαβάζω αυτό). Στο δεύτερο μέρος του βιβλίου, παραθέτονται μεγάλα αποσπάσματα από το βιβλίο του Εμμανουήλ Γκολντστάιν, ενός αποστάτη ο οποίος κινήθηκε εναντίον του Κόμματος, τα οποία συμπεριλαμβάνουν κάποιες από τις απόψεις του. Αν και τα διάβασα με μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον, πιστεύω ότι γίνονταν κάπως μονότονα σε μερικά σημεία και θεωρώ ότι ήταν πιο μακροσκελές από ότι χρειαζόταν. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα παραπάνω, βαθμολόγησα το βιβλίο με 4.5 αστέρια, αντί για 5 και δεν έβαλα λιγότερα, επειδή και πάλι συνέχισα να το διαβάζω με αμείωτο ενδιαφέρον.
Το βιβλίο, όπως και το προηγούμενο βιβλίο του Όργουελ, με έκανε να προβληματιστώ και να νιώσω πολλά συναισθήματα. Άλλοτε ένιωθα φρίκη, άλλοτε ένιωθα φόβο, άλλοτε αγανάκτηση κι άλλοτε τολμώ να πω ότι ένιωθα αισιοδοξία κι ελπίδα. Τελειώνοντας το βρισκόμουν σε απόγνωση και αναλογιζόμουν τι είχα διαβάσει και αν μήπως έπρεπε να αναθεωρήσω κάποιες απόψεις μου. Δεν είναι ένα βιβλίο που διαβάζεται εύκολα, όχι μόνο λόγω της αργής εξέλιξης της πλοκής, αλλά και λόγω του σκοτεινού και ώριμου περιεχομένου. Παρόλα αυτά, αποτελεί τροφή για σκέψη και θεωρώ ότι είναι σίγουρα ένα βιβλίο που αξίζει να διαβαστεί έστω και μία φορά από όλους (όχι από μικρές φυσικά ηλικίες).

Not gonna lie I want to take my eyeballs out and eat them. This shit was so horrifying I can’t even fathom a world like this. But at the same time I see the similarities on how it is today. Not to that extent but enough. And it’s very scary. I didn’t like the book at all but I get the message and I will never ever be reading anything by this man unless I want to unalive myself. I literally have no happiness currently so.

I hated Winston (the main character) because of the way he talks about and to women (he fantasises about rape and murdering women, etc) but aside from this "character flaw" (wich ultimately represents the way women are treated in this dystopian society, so it's fine) i really liked this book, it's somewhat inspiring but equally terrifying and overall really "entertaining" (as entertaining as a dystopian, terrifying novel can be)!!!!

How to summarise my thoughts? Umm… I honestly don’t know! I didn’t necessarily enjoy 1984 but I respected its importance and impact I’d say. In Orwell’s novel we follow Winston Smith who lives in London in a dystopian 1984 where ‘the Party’ and ‘Big Brother’ is always watching you, controlling you, controls the past, present and future. Smith commits thought-crime amongst other things and Yhh I don’t want to explain the plot too much but basically it’s his journey.
What I did like was the tension and eggarness to read on in how Orwell writes. The world building is continuous and vivid that you can theorise this dystopian world with pretty realistic characters. However, I personally though this detail and repetition of certain events, ideas, ‘facts’ and the like are very tiering and long. This was very apparent in Goldstein’s thesis being plastered into the middle of the book taking up a huge chunk of repetition that is seemingly never-ending that I despised. Why was it so long and drawn out? No thank you! Also, the characters do all lack depth and a likeness so in some sense you don’t care about what happens to them no matter how horrible it is - but then again they do live in a world built on terror and control so to find positivity is hard enough… but Yhh I didn’t warm to them. They’re also kinda annoying but I was still intrigued enough to read on. A LOT of it was also quite confusing with contradictory phrases and stuff I dunno - yes this was good in terms of world building the messed up nature of the society and party but still my brain was a bit whirled up.
Overall, I didn’t like the story, plot or characters (not really my vibe) and was far too repetitive and long in my opinion. However, it was written mostly well, kept me intrigued and has became a staple due to its importance where many takes and comparisons to ‘our world’ can be made. So a solid 3 starts from me.

I know this is a "classic" but it might be one of the books that solidified my love for the dystopian genre. I love the world that was built, I love the characters and the decision that they make. This is one of my re-reads every year or so. I keep a physical copy of this book in my car in case I go anywhere and need something to read (once my phone and kindle die).

I was pretty invested in this book at the beginning. Usually world building is tough for me to understand but with this one was different, it was told in such a way that was understandable but not flat or boring.
Reading about this dystopian past (future?) makes me understand and appreciate this classic for what it is: a journey of dehumanization. Exploring themes such as totalitarianism, manipulation (both physical and historical), control and loyalty.
The world building alone makes for such a rich setting that gives place to the critique of modern society that it is.
