A Hint of Maura, but no real interaction between the two of any substance. Makes one wonder how they are the lead characters in these books of the series. Just saying ...
"It’s like getting too close to fire. We’re drawn to it, even though we know damn well it’ll burn us."

First Sentence: Today I watched a man die.
This is one of those series that you don't read one book directly after the other. You have to give it time, forget some of the exact detail of the prevision book.
Or maybe it's just because we're dealing with the same killer, but for me there were to many things that were a copy of the previous book.
I again struggled with the pacing and writing style not fully getting emerged into the story. The fact that this book bore so many similarities to [b:The Surgeon|32263|The Surgeon (Rizzoli & Isles, #1)|Tess Gerritsen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1277923728s/32263.jpg|2674805] just made it so much harder for me to get through. Today I just made myself sit down and finish it, otherwise it would not have happened.
I'm in two minds about caring-on with the series.
I like the characters and general story, but the execution just doesn't gel with me.

The feminist in me had some problems with Gabriel Dean always seeing Jane as a victim which in turn made Jane see herself as a victim even Moe than before.
Why refer to her as damaged instead of helping her be strong when we all know Hoyt only kills 'damaged' women.
Anyways, this one one had lots of Rizzoli and some Isles which was great :)

I thought this one was even better than the first one, and I actually wanted to find more of her books, but I will have to behave for now. I don't normally read serial killer thrillers, but Ms Tess has a real way with pacing, plot and with creating characters you can root for.
I’ve read the Rizzoli and Isles series all out of order. Case in point, I just finished book #2 well after some of the later ones and boy is there a difference. It’s less of a Rizzoli/Isle’s soap opera for one and Gerritsen’s medical background really shows through. I liked this a lot better than some of the older ones, though there really isn’t a friendship between the two women at this point. They’re just people who meet in the morgue.
It’s the summer after The Surgeon had his way with Rizzoli nearly killing her before she managed to capture him. It’s just as hot now as it was then and now there is a new killer on the loose in Boston, a man who likes to subdue the husband, truss him up and make him watch the rape of his wife. He then kills the husband and makes off with the wife killing her some time later. To make things worse, he’s a necrophiliac. Everyone but Rizzoli notices that she’s having issues with this case due to the similarities in style to the Surgeon.
To be fair, Rizzoli notices her issues but doesn’t dare let on to the others. She is suffering like most victims of a violent crime. To make matters worse, an FBI agent Gabriel Dean is on the scene for reasons that no one, not even her boss, knows other than they are to cooperate fully. He obviously knows more than he’s telling and there are some suggestions he might even be the Dominator as they’re calling him (though of course I know Dean from later books, the perils of reading out of order).
Then her worst nightmare comes true. The Surgeon escapes and now she has two psychos to capture. The ending was sadly too Hollywood and predictable for me (costing this one star) but at least it didn’t drag on too long. Overall, an enjoyable read.

This book scared me. I am somehow reading them out of order, and apparently The Surgeon is even scarier. I was nervous the whole time I was reading this one!
