everything about this book i loved and is the first book i have pulled out the sticky flags for 🤓. the tragic innocence of macabea portrayed by the narrator who is undergoing his own meditation about the process of writing and struggling with the inadequacy of language (which is funny given this text has been, and probably continue to be, translated from portugese multiple times lol).

i can’t help but see the struggles of the narrator as reflective of lispector’s own, and that this book is almost like her own semi-autobiographical introspection. because she too, like macabea, was a northeastern girl from brazil who moved to rio with the loss of her mother. following her shot to fame and (assumed) wealth, lispector assumes the role of the rich narrator rodrigo- she then realises that despite her success, she’s just as lost and vague.

the way this was written fascinated me so much. agua viva up next 😤

Como diria Caco Antibes: "Eu tenho horror a pobre!"

I did not enjoyed this book. Actually, I don't quite know if I understand the point of this story.
So, we are reading about an author (and the narrator of this story) that is writing about a very young woman that has everything against her: she is poor, dumb as a brick, ugly, she is doesn't shower, everyone looks down on her, she is nothing to the world and the world is nothing to her. She is just passing through life without actually living it, just waiting for her death (in which she thinks a disturbing amount of times).

Maybe there is a message, somewhere, in this book and I'm just too dumb to get it (just like the girl).

O livro é muito profundo, faz a gente refletir por dias. Macabea é um personagem miserável e refém disso, aceita a vida como é. Me peguei em muitos momentos com misto de sentimento entre pena e raiva. Me peguei em vários momentos tendo empatia e me vendo na personagem. O final é a de deixar sem fôlego, não esperava mesmo. Amei, a leitura é um pouco lenta e talvez complexa, mas vale a pena!
