This book is a testament to Silvia Moreno-Garcia improvement as a writer. That is to say… it was not good. I loved Mexican Gothic and Dr. Moreau so I decided to give this one a shot. The storyline follows a self-described loser who is in fact by all means a loser. I was hoping there would be some sort of redemption, but it never came. A lot of the story revolved around two losers deciding if they wanted to settle for each other while they fumbled in and out of government rat’s nests. The kicker here is that they were both disappointed that the other was not hot or interesting. The actual payoff was in the epilogue which is a big pet peeve of mine- quick and thoughtless. The historical aspects were great, which is why the best part of the entire book was the context given in the afterword.
