The look we got at the historical setting was interesting, it's a subject I knew nothing about being from a different culture, but it made me want to read up more on it.

The characters were not very well developed, and with the exception of Elvis, they were quite unlikeable. That said, they were realistic, and their actions made sense.

I didn't much enjoy the plot and the pace, and while I usually prefer dual POVs, the fact that the timeline was muddy at times made it less enjoyable and immersive for me.

I thought this story was interesting and I liked the dual perspective, but I absolutely LOATHE Maite. She is probably the most annoying character I've read in a long time. I couldn't stand her whining and pretension. She barely improved by the end of it. She just stopped talking about how pretty everyone else was once she was in actual danger.

In this atmospheric noir novel set in Mexico in the 1970s, Maite is a dissatisfied secretary who livens up her life with romance comics, lies, and the occasional petty theft, while Elvis is a member of the Hawks, hired thugs trained to violently disrupt student protests. As they both become embroiled in the search for a missing young woman, Maite and Elvis each seek escape through music and glimpses of beauty in a tedious and often violent world.

Excellent thriller set in Mexico City. Loved the location and out-of-the mainstream plot involving Mexican politics in the 1970’s...a thoroughly engrossing and engaging read!

I was really looking forward to this book. From the synopsis I was expecting a fast paced novel, laced with intrigue and romance, set in Mexico City of the 1970s.
While I really enjoyed the social and historical context, I had trouble connecting with the story.
The pacing felt too slow for me, the narration started picking up only halfway through the book, and I had major difficulties connecting with the characters.
A bit disappointing and not memorable read. It is the first book I read by this author, but given the glowing recommendations I have seen around, I will definitely try to read some other of her works.

i think i would've liked this book more if it didn't take me so long to read it. after reading the afterword, i might have to come back to this one with fresh eyes at a later date.
