I loved the scene setting in this book - I could see these places in mind, but otherwise I found it so so so so boring. I think this author just may not be my jam.

2.5 stars
This book has a slow start and really doesn’t pick up until the last 20% of the book. I didn’t care much for Maite, the main character. She hates her life but has no initiative or drive to change it and waits for things to happen to her. The ending was good once the plot got moving and it was interesting to hear about how the book was set in true events in Mexico in the 70s. Would I recommend it to a friend though? Probably not.

This book is fine. the characters were interesting and the historical setting was one that I was ignorant of so that made it fresh to me. I thought that I suppose in the tradition of lots of noir, it wasn't particularly fast paced and the joy was getting lost in the world.

I’ve had this book on my tbr for so long and I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it. It’s dark, mysterious and full of intrigue, and I could really feel the setting through the writing. I sympathised with Maite, our FMC. She doesn’t lead the most interesting life and when she’s thrown into the search for Leonora, she’s not exactly sure what to do. She spends most of her time comparing things to her beloved romance comics.

This has really made me want to read more fiction/non-fiction about the history of Mexico. It’s a subject I know very little about, and this book is based around true events, so I’d be interested to find out more.

I still think Mexican Gothic is my favourite Silvia Moreno-Garcia book, but this one really impressed me as well. It really had a film noir feel to it that I enjoyed a lot.

Pretty good! I enjoyed this, thought the two main characters and their like, orbit of each other was interesting. Thought it was bold to have this main character woman be so like, just kind of petty and self-interested, and I thought that generally made her more interesting and her parts of the book more fun- like I DO think it's more relatable and compelling to have her motivation be "pay me my money so I can get my car back from the mechanic" rather than "oh no!! I am so genuinely worried about this neighbor woman whom I have met one single time." i do believe before Ive said that it's good when women are shitty and mean and I continue to think this

plot dragged a bit in the middle I think, like there's a long period of just both MCs going back and forth to different places and IMO telling the readers information we could easily guess but you know. Still enjoyable and a good read & I would rec
