This book was my first choice for an October Halloween season read. I really enjoyed Moreno-Garcia'a book Mexican Gothic last year, and this one has been on my to-read shortlist since summer. Once I actually started reading it, I finished it in just a few days (an accomplishment with my new schedule this year).
I was really surprised by how much I loved and cared about the characters, especially Elvis. I thought I would struggle with caring about a character who was essentially a good/henchman but his character really shone through from the first pages. His past was also heartbreaking, reading how he had been exploited was difficult. Maite was also an interesting character, one who found herself really fighting for a cause at the end that she really did not have much interest in, and just fell into this dangerous situation.
The setting is the part of this book that will stay with me. I had no idea about this history, and it was so recent, occuring just a decade before I was born. The danger faced by citizens, many of whom like Maite were just trying to live their lives, and our government's role in it is a history I hope more people become aware of.

Again, a 4.5 probably. Love it when a protagonist is just like. odd. I wonder if she is genuinely supposed to be like that, or if because it is told from her perspective she is just a regular person who is judging herself entirely too harshly the entire time. The stealing thing is weird tho. supporting women's wrongs also! I really appreciate the pacing and how the two perspectives weave together and then synthesize SO nicely at the end. the PLOT TWIST!!!!! the way that she becomes like the heroines in her comic books but Moreno-Garcia throws it so casually, not too heavy-handed. and like. Maybe its just because im emotional like that but my heart was genuinely B R E A K I N G for Maite at the end like. c'mon now. she's just a lover girl at heart and me too babe! but I would read a whole book based on the epilogue high-key.
