This has immaculate vibes, it really captures the setting and the atmosphere of this specific place and time. It also does noir really well! I do think the story itself dragged on too long which lost my interest for a bit in the middle. I think this would have been better as a novella even! The characters are kind of caricatures because that’s how noir is, but I will admit I prefer a more fleshed out cast. But not sure I can fault this book for a genre trope

A fun little crime thriller/mystery! Moreno-Garcia has such range in her writing—I never quite know what to expect from her. The story is quite slow to start (a bit too slow at times), but the alternating perspectives between Elvis and Maite kept some momentum going as the story builds up to a dramatic climax. It's easy to immerse yourself in the world Moreno-Garcia created, made even more interesting by the fact that it's based on true events that racked Mexico in the 1970s. Some parts of the ending were not as satisfying as I would've liked (the camera! The photos!), but it's kind of nice that the story wasn't wrapped up too neatly with a little bow.

Would recommend if you're in the mood for a spicy little thriller!

oh my goodness.
This is the first mystery I've read so far this year, and WOW what a way to start it off. Mexican Gothic is the only other Silvia book I have read, but my expectations for this one were high because of it. I remember loving the uniqueness of MG and just thriving in its intense writing style. Now this book didn't bring those same vibes of gothic horror, but they brought completely new ones that matched the energy PERFECTLY. I loved the mystery itself as well as the dynamic of the characters. Although I was holding my breath waiting for the storyline of Maite and Elvis to eventually pick up, the actual ending she put onto their story was so out of the ordinary that I just was in awe. You can literally feel their connection throughout the book, except they have no actual connection.....ITS INSANE WORK. I just loved this. More Silvia reads are to come! 4.5/5

Would have given lower rating if not for last 20% of the book. Could not get invested in any characters. Setting/political issues of story were interesting but not enough to carry the story. I found most of the book very slow. I really liked Mexican Gothic, but this one just wasn’t for me.

3.5 stars. The book really wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for me. There were parts that really spoke to me but overall it just felt like I was forcing myself to finish it.
