Would have given lower rating if not for last 20% of the book. Could not get invested in any characters. Setting/political issues of story were interesting but not enough to carry the story. I found most of the book very slow. I really liked Mexican Gothic, but this one just wasn’t for me.
3.5 stars. The book really wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for me. There were parts that really spoke to me but overall it just felt like I was forcing myself to finish it.

Read as an audiobook, didn't really grab me, wanted to like it as much as Mexican gothic, but it fell flat. I did enjoy the insight into the history though.
