I dipped back in for a light diversion following One Hundred Years of Solitude. I actually preferred this to the first one. The plot was obvious from very early on (to this seasoned adult reader) but I suspect might be more shocking to a junior. Still, it’s fun, ludicrous in places and has some enjoyable set pieces.
Similar issues to last time. Horowitz seems obsessed in detailing the exact make/model of all the tech and gadgets (presumably this gadget porn appeals to teenage boys) and there are no really well written female characters (I feel the teenage spy genre should really be more unisex). Still, it touches on teen drug addiction and the impacts of violence so it has something to say.
It still feels James Bond Lite but that’s the market. I’ll happily listen to more of these as long as they keep entertaining.
