Please note that I am not suggesting that you raise her to be "non-judgmental," which is a commonly used expression these days, and which slightly worries me. The general sentiment behind the idea is a fine one, but "non-judgmental" can easily devolve into meaning "don't have an opinion about anything" or "I keep my opinions to myself." And so, instead of that, what I hope for Chizalum is this: that she will be full of opinions, and that her opinions will come from an informed, humane, and broad-minded place.
I don't just recommend this book highly, I feel it is a necessary read- necessary for not just all mothers raising daughters, but for all people. Adichie offers such profound, rich insight into feminism with the simple premise. “I matter. I matter equally." And so I cried as I read this book. I cried because of the shame I have felt at aspects of my womanhood and fear that my daughters may feel shame too, but also the affirmation I felt at reading her words. Her discussion of power is noteworthy as well and important for men who are believe they are supporting the feminist cause, but are doing it from their position of power. Women don't need champions in a system of full equality- they can be champions in their own right.
An inteligent letter with a lot of food for thought.
Read it! It is just 80 pages. Take notes as well, this experience is of good value.

I do not consider myself to be a strong woman, but it's something I'm constantly working towards. I hope that I am able to influence other girls and women to become strong women, though. The suggestions in this are brilliant.

I wish my friends were still popping out babies--this is a book I would give to mothers at a baby shower! Adichie may have written these letters to her friend, but I'm so glad she published them. Quick and powerful read about how to raise your daughters (and inadvertently, your sons). I'm adding A LOT of quotes to Goodreads so I can keep track of my favorites.
