Why only four stars? Not enough Stephen! So good, though. It's killing me, waiting for book #4.
I solemnly swear that I did not go all Annie Wilkes on Maureen Johnson while she wrote this book. I did not, nor have I ever, held Ms. Johnson hostage and forced her to write a particular scenario in regards to a most beloved character, nor did I hobble her when she attempted to escape, nor make her burn the only copy of another book she had created simply because it was outside my preferred genre.
However, I am so very thrilled by The Shadow Cabinet that I can understand why one might *think* I went all Misery on the author to get this book. I was heartbroken by the end of the last book, but Johnson said to trust her, so I did. And my trust paid off.
Also, I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book!

Ominous and somewhat suspenseful, though it wasn't really intense enough to be truly chilling. Decently paced and flowing, but not exactly outstanding.
I didn't like this as much as I liked the first two. I thought this series was over, but I see a fourth is meant to come out.. Although 4 years have passed so I'm not so sure if it's actually coming or nah.
I only read up to around page 240 and then skimmed/sped-read the rest. I simply had no further interest in what I was reading, in some way due to the fact that this is not the last book and the story is continuing to be dragged out for at least another installment. I caught some stuff about special magic stones and ghosts and crazy blood cults and creepy twins with an almost "Flowers In The Attic" vibe and something about "defeating death" and tearing the veils between the dead and the living, or something like that, I didn't really care. Anyways, I'm definitely not invested enough to check out the fourth book.
This series is so great. There hasn't been a book yet that was a let down. This one really increases the mythology of the series and fleshes (ha!) out the world a lot more. Rory really takes center stage in this book with the rest of the cast of characters kind of taking a back seat, but it's all for a good reason. I took off a star because something in the ending bothered me.
Spoiler
I really hate that Rory can't remember anything after drinking the mysterious drink that Jane gives her. All of that stuff between Rory and Stephen is basically pointless now. She won't even remember the Shadow Cabinet stuff!
