Through this anthology of essays, various queer and trans writers talk about their complex feelings towards horror movies and how it shaped them but also pushed narratives that were sometimes negative. I’m not a horror movie fan but it was interesting to see how these writers identify with or explored movies like Jennifer’s Body, Get Out, or The Exorcist.

Not every reflection worked for me. A couple in particular grated against my sense of permission-- a not uncommon snag in reading autobiographical work, but the horror movie parallels were all well woven.

As a disclaimer, the content warnings I listed are not of incidents done by the authors but to the authors.
This one is very good. As with all anthologies, some chapters are better than others. The audiobook has so many narrators and I’d be really interested to know how those narrators were chosen/assigned to each chapter. Definitely recommend. Some really interesting arguments to be made about the alignment of horror with queerness.
