Enjoyed the essays, but it had to be returned to the library and the essays became a bit repetitive so I was not motivated to finish it before it was returned. I’d come back to it another time.

An excellent collection of essays and reflections on the shaping of queer beings and the media affluence upon them. As a non-horror fan, it was an informative read although I don’t know many of the stories. As a transsexual pest, I’m a fan.

Decent! Definitely had some weaker entries (they’re gay because they wear a mask, hidden identity!) but the stronger ones were great.

Obviously fantastic and an essay theme that leaves me wishing I was further in my writing career because goddammit this is so up my alley. Some favorites:
Both Ways (Jennifer's Body):
[about queer baiting] "It always struck me as odd to think of public queerness in heterosexual terms, even for ostensibly progressive reasons."
Indescribable (The Blob, Society):
"Thematically, it seems as though the film is making a bleak statement about heterosexuality; all sex is frightening and repulsive, but the uneasiness of straight sex is at least preferable to to terror of homosexuality."
The Working Definition of Monstrous (Godzilla):
"Being on Prep has made me realize that I am afraid of sex. The threat of this virus shames my blood, guilt slips like a needle under my skin."
Twin/Skin (Dead Ringers):
"To look at my mirror twin, then, is to see not a reflection but a refraction. MY TWIN (once) loved me as no other person on this earth has, or ever will. My twin (once, possibly still) has hated me as no other person on this earth has, or ever will."
Black Body Snatchers (Get Out):
"The film doesn’t shy away from its warning about what can happen to Black people who ingratiate themselves to white people. We are not only risking our identities but our whole selves."
Long Nights in the Dark (Halloween):
"The experience of adolescence as a closeted queer boy is one of constantly attempting to imitate the expression of a desire that you do not feel."
On Beauty and Necrosi (Eyes Without a Face):
"I have heard many trans people share this story: of parents taking personally the discovery that the mask they provided is not truly their child. They grieve the loss of the mask as if it were human."
