Great queer experience through horror film. You don’t need to like horror or have seen the movies to like the discussion. However spoilers for the films if you haven’t seen one of them

i really enjoyed pretty much every essay here, which is pretty rare for collections, and i have also added several movies to my watchlist. so it gets full marks from me! extra shoutout to “the healed body”, penned by jude ellison s. doyle, which i found particularly compelling.

This collection contains some queer personal essay, some film criticism, and some queer analysis. All of these modes can be really fun, and the difference from one essay to another is great.

The essays themselves can be pretty hit or miss. A solid handful are absolutely essential and honestly deepened my understanding of the film discussed. Some of the more personal essays are deeply moving. And then on the other hand, some of the essays fall flat, and in one specific case, misreads the actual on-screen events of the film.

My husband and I made this a project, watching each movie and then reading the associated essay just about in order. It was an incredibly rewarding project and way to move through the book! It's difficult to evaluate the book as a while, however, as the content varies so widely. I’d say most of the essays fall at about 4/5, a handful are standout 5/5 essays, and a handful are 1 or 2/5.

Some standouts for me were essays by Carmen Maria Machado (Jennifer's Body), Carrow Narby (The Blob; Society), Sumiko Saulson (Candyman 1992; Candyman 2021), Tucker Lieberman (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Jude Ellison S. Doyle (In My Skin/Dans Ma Peau) and Viet Dinh (Sleepaway Camp).

I genuinely believe that the writer who covered Hereditary didn’t watch the whole film and/or did not understand the events being depicted onscreen.

Horror movies have always been my escape, so getting to read essays from so many other queer people finding comfort or recognition in the same way was wonderful.
