there’s probably something in this for any person who is queer and/or a fan of horror. i really enjoyed some of the essays; some of the essays, i felt didn’t offer much. unfortunately it felt a bit like, perhaps, this could have been edited down, as a few of them felt repetitious, although i did enjoy the unique inside and perspective offered by some.

An anthology of personal essays written by queer people who find solidarity in their shared experience of being made into something horrifying.

my favorite essays were both ways by carmen maria machado and the healed body by jude ellison s. doyle

with the exception of one essay in particular, i loved this book so so much

the link between queer identity and horror has always felt important (and undeniable) to me, so it was lovely to read so many experiences outside of my own and how they related to horror

I am not much of a horror movie buff, I in fact avoid most horror movies because they scare me too much. But the reading of these queer interpretations of the horror genre was so so beautiful.  And interesting.
The only thing that stops this from being 5 stars is I dis find some if the essays were just not for me but that's more a reflection of taste then the writers themselves.

Some of my favourite essays were Both Ways/ Jennifer's Body, Three Men On A Boat/ Jaws,  Centred and Seen/ Candyman, Loving Annie Hayworth/ The Birds, Black Body Snatchers/ Get Out, The Healed Body/ In My Skin

There were so many beautiful essays in this collection and not all of the ones I loved are listed above, but those are the ones I think I'll take with me and that left the biggest impression.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves horror, or reading about the spectrum of the queer experience.

Joe Vallese’s introduction and Carmen Maria Machado’s chapter on Jennifer’s Body are the highlights.
