What is it about NA books that feel even less mature than YA?
It’s an unfortunate truth that NA fantasy romance is usually going to have the most hallmark romance of them all. The first half of the book felt promising, Remy was a character who seemed like she could take care of herself, but as the book progressed it just felt more and more like Prince Hale was just gonna save her. The plot armor was palpable. Nothing felt risky or dangerous. I knew they would both live and end up together. But honestly that’s not my gripe.
It’s literally after they have sex that Remy become irritating to me. It’s almost as if are ability to survive went out the window and she needed “her fated” to survive. Also, can we stop with the “fated” “mated” storyline? Or like, put a twist on it that the female parter finds out first? I dunno, it feels very paranormal romance circa 2007.
The big battle at the end was fun, but there was a chunk in the middle that just felt cringe. I’ll probably give the second book a chance because it doesn’t seem like her sister will cry about something every other page.
Anyway, lemme go read some adult high fantasy.

“Oof,” Talhan said, looking at her feet. “That’s nasty.”
I cannot. The writing quality is really dismal.

Thank you Netgalley and Harper Collins for the ARC, and I tried, I really did, but I DNF at around 25%.
The influence of Maas's books is quite overwhelming, and while I don't like the 'X of Y and Z' novels, I could at least get carried along in the storytelling to finish them. I really struggled to engage with this book though. Right out the gate I found myself questioning some of what we're told... such as 'red witches are hunted', and 'pubs are one of the few places that employ witches' and 'here's a red witch working with a bunch of other witches in a pub' who is now surprised that 'a witch hunter has found her' by page 9. I mean, if I was hunting witches of any 'colour', the pub is probably the first place I'd check.
With the meeting of Remy and the Prince, I was cringing a little at the 'banter' and how quickly so many YA novels resort to the male love interest blackmailing or kidnapping the heroine. There's nothing offensively bad about it, it was just too derivative.

Wow, really loved this book. I came into it with no prior knowledge and no recommendations from anyone to read it, but left ready to read the other books in the series. Remy's journey in this story was surprising - in a good way. She's a good heroine and I'm ready to see where the story continues to lead.
Hale felt a bit flat at times, but I'm hoping that's so his story can be expanded in the following books. I really like him, I wanted more from the character.
I'm excited to see where this series leads me!

I very much enjoyed this book. Everything was well thought out and easy to follow. Parts made me laugh, others made me cry (which doesn't happen a whole lot for me). I loved how diverse and different the characters were. The story was unique and interesting. I look forward to the next book.
