Not among my favorite Stephen King books, but I did enjoy this story, and the idea of the fantasy world that can heal us.

Stephen King is the only author I know that can effectively disturb me and creep me out in one book and then almost make me cry in another book, because as this book ended I almost lost my fucking cookies holy shit. Such a powerful, bittersweet close to a deeply personal and emotional novel. It’s as much about grief as it is abbot love. Lisey and Scott have a special, albeit strange, bond that makes their marriage incredibly intimate and at times beautiful. The parallels between Scott’s childhood dealing with lunacy and Lisey dealing with a crazed fan of Scott’s two years after his death (not a spoiler, Scott’s death is how the novel starts) in my opinion further proves that Scott and Lisey are soulmates through and through. I can see why this novel is so important to King, especially knowing that the inspiration stems from when he was hospitalized with double pneumonia and almost died, then came home to Tabitha redoing his studio and saw all his stuff in boxes and was struck with the thought “this is what it will look like when I do die.” This might be King’s favorite novel that he’s written, and I don’t know if it’s personally my favorite (he has so many amazing 5 star novels) but that’s okay, for one it’s definitely way up there for me, but also because I think a novel like this will always be closer to the creator than anyone who reads it, which is saying something because this is regardless an immensely powerful novel. King was put on this earth to write novels, he is in my opinion the best at the craft especially when he himself is at his best.
It took me a little time to get into the book. Which is the reason it's not a 4 star for me. SK is amazing with details but sometimes I think it's a bit much. The last 1/3 of the book was 5 stars.
This is definitely my least favorite King novel. The main character's manner of speaking (her and her dead husband's "language") was so annoying and repetitive that I found myself really "smucking" annoyed. Very unforgettable. It takes King's weaknesses (repetitiveness, cheesiness, difficulty writing female characters) and amplifies them.
