I’d say this is another unheralded gem that I’ve encountered while reading along with the Just King Things podcast. It certainly has shades of previous novels, especially Bag of Bones and Rose Madder, but it’s incredibly compelling. It does still feature a major King complaint, namely, it’s longer than it needs to be, but it’s creepy and literary in a way that’s uniquely King.

I decided to give Stephan King one more chance because he delighted me when I was too young to know better. This was a huge disgusting waste of time. I can't think of anything more annoying that the use of "smucking" instead of "fucking."
slow-paced

I have read a LOT of Stephen King, and this may have been my 2nd least favourite. The first 3/4 needs some serious editing to make sense and to make it interesting. Also, can we cut the number of made-up words? It seemed like he had a quota per page to hit for "bool", "smucky", SOWISA, etc. There were good scenes scattered throughout but they were buried in so much filler that it was a real struggle to finish.

This one is ok just not for me I think. Lisey is likable enough but the nonlinear plot was a detriment for me. The whole thing felt bittersweet and his dedication to his wife made a lot of sense. Overall ok, but not as horror as I would have liked so if you love kings style but not subject matter this might be the one for you

I hated it. Could not make sense of the story. The horror that crept up, had no function, in my opinion.
Gave up half way through and was sorry ever to have started it.
challenging slow-paced

This book was not one of my favorite Stephen King books. Usually, the story line is so absorbing, but this one is just mediocre. It about Lisey and the events leading up to the death of her husband, Scott. He ultimately sends her on a quest after his death to find his story to her. I did enjoy, as usual, King's random ramblings between Lisey's thoughts. Always makes me smile.

While I can see why not every Constant Reader might like this particular book, I very much did. It is a not an easy read; a story rife with sadness, anger, loss, and generally uncomfortable emotions.

…[B]y then she's lost in the land of sleep and he is too, and when they go there they never go together, and she is afraid that is also a preview of death, a place where there may be dreams but never love, never home, never a hand to hold yours when squadrons of birds flock across the burnt-orange sun at the close of the day.
