Ryan Holiday's Stillness reads like a Robert Green-light book. It's shorter and less depth. But that's my no means a bad thing. Actually I think it's a great introduction to a lot of concepts which you can explore further.
I listened to the audiobook and had a little notepad with me while listening and made quite some notes on people, articles and books mentioned in this book.
It has some great advice on stillness. Read books, ditch your phone, get rid of stuff you don't really need, focus on the important stuff, get lost in the woods sometimes.. advice which for most of us who want to improve our game (whatever that is), probably not new.
I found the chapter on Tiger Woods quite upsetting. I didn't know his story. Like that of Michael Jordan's anger it serves as a warning to get motivation mainly from a positive source. From the love of the sport.
And to balance your goals in one area with the rest of your life.

This book is full of food for thought. Although I felt like from his writing, Holiday was clearly influenced by a certain lifestyle that I couldn't 100% relate to, I was able to adapt a lot of useful insights from the overall concepts discussed in each chapter to my experience. It's definitely a book to be picked up again and again, to remind myself and to provide a rough framework for actionable change to help me find my "stillness."

In Stillness Is The Key,, Ryan Holiday makes a case for developing the capacity for stillness as an essential aspect or quality of the life well-lived. Working on the premise that stillness is a function of harmony between mind, heart, and body, Holiday treats each in turn, examining and providing prescriptive counsel for each. His writing is studded throughout with relevant quotes, examples from the lives and experiences of others, and examinations of different contributors to stillness in mind, body, and spirit.

Each major section is composed of short chapters that deal with qualities, actions, or ideas that contribute to stillness. Herein lies the reason for my four star rating. In nearly every case, I found ideas and thoughts I could either put immediately to work, or that gave me reasons to ponder in more depth. Frequently, though, it seemed to me that he "forced" his efforts to relate each to stillness. They were good ideas, but sometimes seemed more generally to have to do with living a good life than with developing or accessing stillness.

Despite that drawback, I found it a thoughtful book, and one that prompted both ideas and actions for me. I ended with nine pages of notes that I will certainly revisit from time to time...too much to include here, but suffice it to say, the book was well worth the read.

Ryan Holiday likes to quote Marcus Aurelius. This quote in the book - “Ask yourself at every moment, ‘Is this necessary?’” convinced me to put the book down. Lots of repetition here, in the chapters themselves and with other, better books I have read.

2.5/5 I may have grown out of the phase where these books have the impact that they used to have one me. Good to revisit some of these philosophers and pillars, but probably not the best for me right now.
