For a few seconds they just stood there in stillness, his arms around her, his breath on her ear. Most people go through their whole lives, Marianne thought, without ever really feeling that close with anyone

i really liked this for its mundanity and the way it encapsulates two young people navigating relationships. i don’t think it was anything groundbreaking, and sure the protagonists are unlikeable + frustrating at times - not a crime - but Rooney’s way of portraying the closeness between Connell and Marianne + their compatibility through different phases of their relationship felt very authentic to me. i can’t say I wasn’t hooked!

perfectly heart wrenching until the very end. i truly have no notes, but for the no quotations. the open-ended conclusion is eating away at me, and i am choosing to believe they find each other in the future.

Woah, where do I start with this one? I would probably rate it a 3.5 - I would say a 4 however that ending was so empty for me and there were a lot of problematic elements that it took the shine off it.

Lets start by saying both characters are extremely damaged individuals.

At the beginning of the timeline Connell is keeping Marianne secret, there is a clear class divide and he uses his love as a conversation filler rather than it holding true meaning. He can also be cruel when he wants to be.

Marianne is living in an abusive household and this abusive cycle continues to the end of the novel, she demands to feel pain because it's all she knows.

Don't get me wrong I know this is probably more realistic than most books but those two are destined to self sabotage or sabotage one another's relationships until they both seek help. I also felt it was curious that Connell was the character on the receiving end of the therapist and not Marianne.

It was gripping but i'm not sure for the right reasons and of course due to the tv show success a sequel is likely to be imminent, which I will almost definitely need to read to seek closure.

I read this book after reading Beautiful World Where Are You, and I don't think I would have picked it up on its own. While there are themes in this book about issues such as class difference in social dynamics, capitalism, and tackling the habit of wealthy people discussing ideas about the working class as if it was fiction or entertainment, there was a certain bleakness that I felt throughout the entire book that I wasn't particularly fond of.

I did find the writing beautiful, and it can definitely make the reader think about what really is the definition of a healthy person as well. It wouldn't be a surprise to say that both of the main characters are quite unhealthy and that it is continually explored throughout the book.

However, it's maneuvering through the story and pinpointing exactly the areas of themselves where the characters needed to work on that was interesting for me. It can make the reader think about their own issues and what other areas of their lives they can face, to learn from the book and try to become a healthier person themselves.
