This book was The Stand, but you know. Better. And holy heck, was it long. 32 hour audiobook which puts it only ten hours behind The Stand! This one went by much more quickly though, in part because the narrators were fantastic.

So I was worried about how long this book is. At 800 pages it’s longer than most and certainly longer than what I normally read. But I found the pacing to be very strong and rarely if ever did I feel like I had slog through any section. Wendig brings lots of thoughts, ideas and characters to the story and weaves them well to keep the intrigue up. Sure there were times I felt like I wanted to skip ahead, but as soon as I started in on a chapter, I was consistently pulled in.
I generally enjoyed the main characters. Early on, as we jumped to new people I felt like it might be too much, I was already invested in a number of people and all of a sudden here was someone new andI didn't know where they fit it. But, given a little latitude, Wendig was able to being the new character to the story in meaningful ways.

I so looked forward to this book... and it really disappointed me.

This book was too long. Good, but I found myself skimming over long passages of characters just... Reflecting. On their lives, their feelings. Is this typical of Wendig? I don't know. I kept checking to see how much book was left, wondering when or if my questions would be answered. In the end, I was sort of disappointed. It all wraps up nicely, but that ending maybe went a little too far. Well, I can't recommend it, but please use your own discretion and be prepared for a long haul.
