I liked the idea of what could have been more than how it was executed. Anticlimactic and subpar ending: just an overall meh feeling to the entire book.
Anne Tyler writes so well about families and especially here, exploring a pivotal time for one family (in particular the mother) as all the children are growing up. I love Tyler’s insight and gentle humour. I really liked reading this.
Kind of a fantasy for 45 year old women who’ve been married a long time and are raising teenagers.

I enjoyed the concept of someone leaving and starting over. I didn’t like the character and thought she was very selfish, I thought the ending was strange and whole wedding thing super odd. Found the characters meh
Because it was different I liked it. Because the writing seemed to be as un-ordinary as her main characters, I didn't like it. Tyler tells a good story, but that seems to be it...it felt lacking in emotion and depth. As for the ending...I didn't see it coming.
Oh, Anne Tyler. You write such lovely, quirky stories. But sometimes I get so frustrated with your characters! I suppose it's a good thing that I'm so invested in their lives. I was so absorbed by this novel about Delia Grinstead and her decision to walk away from her family. I really enjoyed the new life and friends she made in Bay Borough. And then... the ending. I wanted something different for Delia. But that's okay.

I enjoyed this, and the way my opinion of Delia and her actions changed throughout the book ... parts of it are quite dark and deep and serious, other times you want to shake her out of her selfish nonsensical behavior.
I was super disappointed by the ending and felt it was a real anti climax. With a better ending I would have given it 4 stars
