As my second Tyler in a row, definitely can see where her strengths are - amazing cast of characters and a close up look at the inner workings of a marriage.

Character
I know that making an unlikeable protagonist doesn't mean the writing is bad or the book is bad, but yech. Didn't care for our girl (cor-)Delia. I don't want to post spoilers, but spoiler tags are too much effort for this book. Didn't like when she (act one reversal), and didn't like when she (final resolution).
This story is warm, comfortable and quietly questioning as a good novel often is. A woman wonders almost by accident who she is, what her family means and how she fits in with them. Through her travels over an eighteen month period, she quietly finds answers to questions she didn’t know she had.
Well written, quiet and insightful, this is a well crafted tale, this begs to be transformed into a script for the stage.

This book started off strong. I really felt for Delia and could understand why she felt she just had to walk away. I found her family to be so frustrating and self centred. I was just waiting for them to get their come comeuppance. When she returns for the wedding and, the family just try to walk all over her again, I felt even more frustrated. I was willing Delia to stand up for herself, to put them all in their place and, make them understand why she had left. But that didn't happen and she just abandoned the new life she had made for herself, without a care for the consequences or for the new friends she was leaving behind.
This book wasn't what I expected. It read as being quite old-fashioned and set in a decade that hasn't been around in awhile. The story also was too safe - it was lacking some much-needed depth and grit. As I finished the book, I was thinking, "Really? This is all?!" It was nicely done for what it is (see above), but didn't consist of what, I believe, makes a good story.
This was so good, I'm fairly certain I'll read it again. Classic Anne Tyler.
I really liked this. Engagingly written, melancholic but also fun. The ending... I did not like the ending. But I get it, I think.
I couldn't get past the first chapter. Just not interesting to me at all.
