MYSTICAL STITCHES by Christi Johnson

As the title implies, it is all about sewing stitches for decoration on clothing or accessories. I chose this book for the designs offered, I value them for their artistic properties. There is a good spread of designs, none too satanic or witchcraft looking. I had reservations since it's titled Mystical.

The author has models wearing clothing articles that have been embroidered using the designs offered in the book, so you will have an idea of how they look on the finished product.

Highly recommend. Perfect for needle artists and even journalers like myself.

Many thanks for the complimentary copy of #mysticalstitches from #netgalley I was under no obligation to post a review.

not what I was anticipating or looking for. overall just not for me!

Mystical Stitches; Embroidery for Personal Empowerment and Magical Embellishment by Christi Johnson is about exactly what it says, adding embroidery to your fabric items to empower yourself.

There is lots of inspiration here, from the patterns to what they've been stitched on.  There are templates, lots of clear information, and beautiful photos.

Interesting mystical indigenous approach to arts and crafts. Loved it.

Mystical Stitches is a wonderfully written, excellently illustrated book.
Suitable for beginners, it covers a range of topics such as various stitches, how to prepare your fabric and thread, etc.
However, the one aspect of this book that I enjoyed the most was the metaphysical. Tapping into the rise of pagan beliefs, Mystical Stitches combines art with spirituality. Motifs are explored not only in terms of fashion, but of cultural and spiritual meaning, which is a refreshing find within a craft-related publication.

I love the concepts here and I love how the author Christi Johnson manages to invite the reader in to explore without overwhelming or condescending. The way she walks you through types of stitching, styles of preparation and setting intention and then provides ample instruction and suggestion for imagery and color to bring all the ideas together. Absolutely delightful and I can't wait to try some out myself.

This wasn't quite what I was expecting but that's not necessarily a bad thing. As well as being packed full of embroidery patterns for mystical items/symbols, it also talks a lot about the ritual of embroidery stitching, the power of symbols and creating your own talisman. There is also discussion on the use of mediation, stretching and more to help you in your creative process.

The book also includes instructions for those who have never embroidered before including clear diagrams on how to form the various stitches. And then there are a good number of projects with ideas for where to use embroidery, for example clothes, homeware and, jewellry. The symbols vary from geometric, to botantical to astrological and much more, definitely something for most people.

For me, I'm not really into the mystical acts side of things, but I still enjoyed this book due to it's wonderfully wide range of embroidery patterns, clear instructions and varied project ideas.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for this ARC copy in return for a nonbiased review.

I definitely recommend this book. I had a great time looking through the designs and I’m excited to try my hand at some stitching of my own.

informative inspiring fast-paced

This book is really meant for absolute beginners.

Large sections of it are devoted to:
1. Stitches
2. Symbolism
3. Color composition
4. Sample patterns
5. Stitch guide for symbols

I was able to skim through it in under an hour to be honest (as I didn’t need the dictionary type info).

There were a few likeable elements: her focus on the meditative slow art benefits; comparing stitching to an above, below creative process; and creating rituals around your stitching to imbue with magical intention (though this was very brief). I expected the book to be more of the latter info so I was disappointed.
