Full of action, tension, adventure, and heartbreak. This book serves as the climax of the first half of the series and it does a fantastic job of it. The battles are excellent and it’s incredibly fun to see how each side approaches fighting the other. There are some minor points of convenient plot solutions, but they by no means ruin the story. Once again, Sullivan does not hesitate to give his characters trauma and heartbreak. But he also gives them moments of inspiration and bravery and compassion. Yet again I loved it.
It was interesting to read the introduction where Mr. Sullivan states that this six-book series is more like two trilogies put together. That makes sense because in many ways this book could've easily been the concluding book. But as Mr. Sullivan said, there would've still been a lot of questions left unanswered for readers regarding the founding of the empire, so he wrote three more books to answer those questions. My feelings on this series continue to be about the same; an enjoyable enough series if somewhat generic.
I'M NOT CRYING OR ANYTHING.
Michael Sullivan, you've done it again. Another spectacular book! Counting down the days until Age of Legends...
I love you Raithe. You were a great book husband. RIP.
This was a real page-turner for me and wrapped up the immediate storylines really well.
I absolutely LOVE this series and all of its characters. I highly recommend it for all fantasy fiction lovers!
I received an advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
This series just keeps getting better! The story continues with Persephone taking up the mantle of Keenig and walking right into a war with the Fhrey.
Pros:
Character and World development were on point.
Story was pretty engaging and faced paced most of the time.
Love the direction the story is headed and can't wait to read more!
It made me cry. I don't like crying but I like that I was drawn into the world enough to make me feel that strongly about it.
Cons:
The first chapter seemed a little wooden. IDK why. May have just been me but I am going to reread and see if I can pin it down.
The Gifford trope seemed way overplayed to the point of being irritating. I hated his chapters.
It wasn't long enough! I would actually like more chapters based in the Fhrey world.

I don’t know if it’s just that I’m not in the right headspace at the moment, but I feel like I’m just not connecting with the characters. This book was a really fun end to the first arc of the series though and I enjoyed how the story builds on itself over time. Everything slowly coming together.
I will preface this by saying that I received a copy of this novel as a beta reader for Michael.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I was convinced that [b:Age of Swords|32337902|Age of Swords (The Legends of the First Empire, #2)|Michael J. Sullivan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1481987017s/32337902.jpg|25336186] was going to be my favorite in the series... now I'm not sure.
The great thing about the First Empire series is that you do not have to have read any of [a:Michael J. Sullivan|2063919|Michael J. Sullivan|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1433443335p2/2063919.jpg] Riyria novels... they stand on their own merit.
But, your reading experience may be slightly awesomer if you have read the Riyria novels.
Michael effortlessly weaves epic battle sequences with heart rending moments for his characters. I couldn't put the book down for the last 5 or six chapters.

This is turning out to be a really solid and enjoyable fantasy series. I like seeing the "truth" behind some of the legends in the Riyria books, and knowing how things turned out doesn't actually affect my enjoyment at all.

This is my favorite so far in the series. I’m not sure why, but I think I just enjoyed all the various plots that weave through this particular book. I will say though, it was also the hardest to read — in particular because of the loss of Mina and Aryan.
I am definitely interested to see where the story goes next. Quite a good cliffhanger-light ending.
