So lovingly written, each story stood on its own, even the shortest ones. I enjoyed how earnestly sex and desire were talked about here, especially from the perspective of women. Physicists story was my personal standout, really interesting conversations on faith in that one.

3.5-4 // I adored this collection of short stories! I am not usually keen on reading short story collections because I worry that such a small amount of pages won’t be able to encompass everything necessary in making a proper story. Luckily, this collection proved that assumption wrong! I particularly enjoyed Eula, Peach Cobbler, and How to Make Love to a Physicist.

Philyaw is an amazing writer, the impact of these stories really hits. My only complaint is that the book ended.

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies is a debut collection of raw, engrossing short stories that intersects sex, sexuality, relationships, and the church written by a 49-year-old Black woman writer, who had no marketing budget and still secured a finalist spot for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction. (Well deserved btw.) I'm hooked.
