I have so many things to say about this book….I hated all the characters. Despised them. Luke was okay, but the rest were downright stupid (minus one point). The descriptions of the scary scenes were really good and pretty disturbing (plus one point). Your daughter comes home bruised with amnesia after hanging out with the neighbor you just met?Let’s just sit down and have breakfast, nothing to worry about (minus one point). Start of the book was strong, I thought it was going to stay that way throughout (plus one point). So many deaths and yet NO ONE thinks it’s a good idea to call the police or inform someone of the happenings on the property. NO ONE would’ve reacted to the situations in this book like they did. NO ONE. Such shallow, meaningless characters. And the dialogue was HORRENDOUS. Too much time was spent dilly dallying on the nonsensical banter between the family. So unrealistic (minus soooo many points). The only reason this is getting three stars is that I enjoyed the audiobook narration, as it really brought the spooky scenes to life. The author knew what he was doing when it came to description.

3.5 stars. A fun engaging demonic house read. It reads very much like 2000s horror movie, which I liked. The visual descriptions were vivid and scary, but the dialogue started to become a little cheesy and unbelievable, especially once the family knew what was happening in the house.

Empty characters and story make this a shallow experience. I'm baffled that even the dog was a poorly written character... how someone would keep a random stray that shows the amount of aggression Buck did is beyond me - between aggressively chasing people, biting the home owner, and knocking people down multiple times you'd think the family would maybe find the dog a different home. I say this as a dog owning, bleeding heart vegetarian too. Writing was subpar, similes were all whack and absurd - kind of like those silly examples you read from students. The horror boils down to big, sca-wy demon is angry at god and wants to wreck havoc in the most bland way, including spewing out a villain monologue.

Ah, another thing was using famous horror names for the characters felt like a cheap way to try to add depth to the story.
