The Hill family buy a farmhouse to renovate only to discover that it was previously owned by a recently deceased exorcist who has left behind a well in the basement that has been nailed shut and adorned with crosses. They soon realise that the well is not the only thing that remains in the house...

I loved this! I like my horror to be unsettling and this definitely ticked that box. I read The Exorcist years ago and it became a favourite of mine, and this novel is definitely up there with it as a great tale of possession and evil forces.

⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️

The only reason I've gone for 4.5 instead of 5 is because there are also some ghosts in this tale. I love ghost stories. I love possession stories. But for some reason I just don't want them in the same novel!

This book was WILD! But I loved every second of it.

The Hills purchase a dilapidated farmhouse in West Virginia with the hopes of renovating and flipping it. But what they don’t know is that evil lives in the basement of that house, and it will do anything to escape.

This book had me on the edge of my seat and creeped me out, but left me wanting to keep going. I had to know what happened. @spookywv does a phenomenal job with characters, scenery, and has you along for the ride. It was like reading an exorcism horror movie and I was HERE

2.5/5 ⭐️⭐️

Started strong and creepy! However, the book went from Stephen King to Goosebumps level camp towards the end of the book (aka it got super cheesy)

It had nice and scary moments at the start but it was like reading a whole different book as the story progressed, and every single family member wasn’t likable either, so I kinda rooted for the demon lmao (although loved buck and merle!).

Something positive: it is an easy read hence the 3 stars and I truly believe that this book was an ode to all the old school horror movies we know and love. So if you like campy horror, you might enjoy this one!
