The Exorcist's House

Note: It was 3 am. I was laying with my back facing the room reading this and admittedly scared as hell. My cat chose that exact moment to walk up (completely silent, mind you) and gently lick my elbow. I screamed.

That aside, I liked this book a lot and read it in almost one sitting. The writing is a little bit bare bones but in my opinion that adds to the atmosphere of the novel. I appreciate the religious themes as always and can confidently say that at times I was terrified while reading this. 4 stars!

Recommended to folks who love a good exorcism story, who have had haunted experiences of their own (and like to be scared), and who see the eyes in the ceiling, the window, the corners of the room. So many eyes.

OOOOOOHHHHH BOY! This was everything I wanted The Exorcist by Blatty to be (but it happened to be a let down) so I'm really really really glad I randomly found this book. It took about 80 pages for me to really get invested in it, but I'm glad I stuck it out because I loved everything else. Was the writing the greatest thing? Nah. Was it the most original idea? Not really. But holy hell I had a blast reading this. I got chills and spooks. And the main conflict wasn't resolved in a few pages, like in the Blatty book where it felt too easy. There was actually high stake stuff going on within the conflict that I wasn't satisfied with in Blatty's book.
Overall, I'm so impressed with this book and had the best time reading it!

Fantastic ending! The Exorcist House was ranging around 4 stars until that ending. It just took it from good horror to great.

The Exorcist House has everything in it that I love about the horror genre. This was such a fun book to read around this time of the year.

✔️ Scary moments in the book that made me feel uneasy and spooked!
✔️ October, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for a demon possession.
✔️ Buck, our goodest boy. The best bloodhound around.
✔️ The good ole Catholic starter kit to fight an evil presence. Holy water, rosary beads, crosses and all.

Really glad to read this one and highly recommend it to all my horror lovers out there!

The prologue was the best part (spooky, creepy, a likable character that I immediately cared about) but it went sharply downhill from there. The writing quality was meh, with constantly rotating POVs, cumbersome dialogue, and unnecessary repetitions of scenes between characters, most of whom felt flat or downright unlikeable. It also felt like the author didn’t trust the reader to have a single thought of their own, as everything was explained directly before you could even begin to wonder what it might mean or where it might go.

I was going to give two stars since it still kept my attention for the most part, but the author’s very surface-level research of Catholicism for reference was painful at times. Why, in the year 2022 of our Lord, did someone publish an exorcism story—the roots of which are drenched in Catholic rites and beliefs—and still manage to include the misconception that the upside down cross is demonic/blasphemy? It literally takes a simple google search to tell you it’s no less a holy symbol in the Church than the regular cross. The priest character was also clearly written by someone who has no idea how priests actually talk.

I’m glad the book was short, because I wouldn’t have made it through if it was dragged out any further.
