A step up from book one. The prose, plotting, and character work all improved.

3.5⭐️
Great world-building, action, and world-spanning plot.
But the cheesy dialogue/internal monologue is ruining the characters for me, and that is souring my experience with the story overall. By the end of this one, I was desperate to be done and couldn’t get myself to care about the action anymore because I didn’t really care what happened to anybody. Despite a wild amount of characters involved in this story already in just two books, there’s not a single one I feel attached to in any way, save maybe the dragon, Valerys.
I think this is highly accessible fantasy for people not as comfortable in the genre, as it’s easy to read, mostly fast-paced, and has fun elements to it. But as someone who likes to highlight memorable lines and falls in love with deeply complex characters, I’m disappointed that these first two books have had neither for me.
I’m not the type of person to “go against the grain,” and I’d rather enjoy this with everyone else, but it’s just not working for me as I’d hoped and it’ll be a while before I read the next one.

Best part of the series so far, interesting story development before it all gets a bit battle heavy in book 3
