This book certainly presented what my hopes for this series were when reading the first book. As much as I found the first book to be heavily reliant on other popular works of fantasy and struggled a bit to find it's own footing. This one is the beginning of it's divergence from it's influences and hopefully the start of it becoming it's own unique story. It wasn't quite there yet, but there is a potential for this series to become it's own thing and veer away from being merely an impressive homage.

The story continues to be compelling but I felt like the middle dragged on for a bit. Very much a character driven book which is a shift from book 1. There were lots of traveling and dialogue scenes and not a lot of action. Looking forward to reading the next one.
This book was a proper emotional rollercoster, and it started from the first page. Over 800 pages of action and even for a second, I wasn't bored.
This book follows multiple characters, which means I have to remember a lot of names and connections. As a person who struggles with it, I am impressed how, in one sentence, the author reminded me who this or that character is.
Amazing character developments, world building which isn't overwhelming. A lot of humour, to the point I was giggling out loud, but unfortunately, not only humour is in the book. Characters deal with a lot of grief and loss, and for the first time I read a book in which characters deal with it not in one or two sentences. Ryan Cahill described it with so much more depth, what makes the book better and more realistic.
But the ending... WTF 😱 Haven't seen it coming at all. Just blew my mind.
Honestly, I can't find anything that I didn't like or enjoyed. I can't wait to start 2.5 novella and book 3.

What really impressed me with this book is how the mental health side of the story was so well portrayed. It wasn’t a simple “oh my friend died now I’m sad” it went into so much more depth than that and it really made the story unique and made me REALLY think about the anguish that the characters tears were experiencing.
