I loved Sarah Penner's The Lost Apothecary, but this one fell a little bit short. It felt like the premise was such a good one to be set up for such a good plot and I was interested in the wlw aspect, but it just overall felt like it was missing something. I'm not a huge fan of the teacher/student relationship dynamic and I never really fell in love with any characters. The wlw felt like an afterthought and the mystery seance aspect was central, but even then it didn't feel very intriguing. I also liked the idea of multiple POV between the main character and the villain of the story . Overall, a great idea but the execution just wasn't there.
3.5 ⭐️ I’m thinking maybe Sarah Penner is not for me. The premises of her books always sound SO good and SO interesting and then fall flat. This one had so much promise. Secret societies, ghosts, seances, a murder mystery? Sign me up. But it just drug on and on and the plot twists and reveals were just meh. The romance in the book, at times was interesting, but I also struggle with a teacher/student romance even if the main character is 20. Overall this was incredible mediocre.

For me this book was a cute and fun read. While I probably wouldnt read for a second time it was defenitly interesting. My rating was a hard one to give. I sway between a 3.95 and a 4 star for this. I cant put my finger on what this book could be missing. It was perfectly written, kept me interested but nothing pushes me to read it a second time. Could just not be my type of book but usually this is up my alley. This is by no fault of the authors. And honestly could have had to do with the audiobook I listened to also.
Overall I think its worth the read and honestly the twists were unexpected for me.
