CW: There is lots of dog death and violence against animals.
I don't read a ton of horror, because I don't know where to turn. Luckily Read Harder can push me out of my comfort zone. And this story about a group of four Blackfeet men who are haunted by a past horror committed by them. I was absolutely enthralled by this page turner. And the horror kept pulling me deeper and deeper. There is some amount of gore (which I am a fan of), but this is very high on psychological scares and the increasing madness of the four men. I've put a lot of the authors other books on hold because it was just so goddamn good.

wow. this book whacked me upside the head, stole my breath away, had me absolutely awestruck and terrified and amazed. this is the first book in a long time that really grabbed my emotions - there were really times where I was queasy with second hand embarrassment or genuinely too scared to keep reading. the way this story handles characters, cycles, stories themselves - it's honestly not like anything I've ever read. I knew I liked stephen graham jones' writing, knew he did horror in new and exciting ways, but this really took it to the next level. absolutely phenomenal. those last few pages will stay with me for a long time.

This had all the elements of a classically good horror story while still offering an incredibly well done commentary on the cyclical nature of violence, particularly violence against women. I feel a lot of commentaries fall short in that they tell not show. However, Jones shows and shows incredibly vividly, from basketball games to head smashings.

You also cannot talk about this book without talking about the monster because oh my god what a well done monster. I loved how the reader comes to understand her and even empathize with her without her ever seeming human or having human-like traits. Also the use of the second person when in the monsters perspective was quite the attention grabber.

This will definitely go down as one of my most memorable reads of the year and I’m excited to read more from this offer. Great book to be my first written review on goodreads hehe

2.5 stars. This book was so slow for me. I found the surrounding stories to move really slow and then the actual action/gore to go by too fast. I feel like if I saw this as a movie versus simply reading it, I might enjoy it more.
