My favourite book of the series!

The plot was fantastic and super interesting with a dive into the breadth of magic history. There was a good level of peril and some super spell-use too. Aaronovitch is very descriptive in his writing which has always made the fight sequences vivid and dynamic, and he continues with this instalment.

All the favourites at the Folly and beyond were involved with only a few new key names dropped in (the foxes made a great appearance too). I have really enjoyed Peter Grant and Sahra Guleed’s teamwork throughout the series and particularly loved reading the sections involving them interviewing people together.

Peter has completely stopped making weird comments about people which I appreciate enormously as they previously made the books  awkward, and has also limited his media references to only a few well-chosen moments.

Above all, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith has made this series absolutely fantastic to listen to. His characterisation is brilliant - everyone is unique and instantly memorable. I have WHIZZED through this book because of his incredible reading and would suggest anyone who wants to get into the series listens to the audiobooks!

The ROL books are like pizza: even the bad ones are still pretty good for the most part, so while I wasn't crazy about this particular outing, I still recommend this if you enjoy urban fantasy, London, and procedurals or some combination thereof.

I don’t know why I had assumed the series had ended, but it was a seriously good surprise to find out it wasn’t when I went to reread.

I love these books.

This is a solid entry into the Rivers of London series: a good procedural which expands our understanding of the ROV 'verse, and has a few surprises.

That said, it doesn't sparkle. While I purposely tried to slow down my reading, I felt no urge to rush through this story as I have past Rivers of London Novels. And as for laughs, there was only one LOL moment - one.

I think the wonder factor is missing - Peter here seems an old hand - policing with magic has just become policing - and there are no "I love magic" moments, making for a somewhat dull book, comparatively speaking.

'The wider the base, the greater the stability of the builiding,' said Nightingale. 'You taught me that.'
I thought of the future - which now had my daughters in it, and foxes, and mad Northern smiths, and whatever mischief Abigail was going to get herself into.
I raised my bottle.
'To the future,' I said. 'Whatever it is.'
