I had the urge to rate this higher but only because compared to the previous it was so much better but it wasn't one of the more enjoyable of the series. There was too much descriptive recap which having some at this point can be good especially coming off a more side story book but it can be too much. Having created such a big character of the sister I expected more out of this character.
This book brings forth all negative aspects in Terry’s writing for The Sword of Truth series: it is too preachy, needlessly long, and with too many recaps. Richard makes his moral stand when he first encounters Owen… must we really read everything again when he joins with the rest of the Bandakar? Then, a similar situation happens with D’Haran history and how the pristinely ungifted were banish… we were told this 3 times! In detail!
There was almost zero development in this story, I feel like The Pillars of Creation and Naked Empire could have been one single book.

This book follows directly after The Pillars of Creation. I was hoping after a book that didn't focus on the main characters that the next book would be really good and showcase the main characters. However, this entire book seems to be just a side story.
Kalan and Richard spend the whole book trying to get the antidote for a poison that Richard ingests. In the process of doing that, they attempt to help the people that poison him as a form of blackmail.
This side story doesn't seem to add to the overall story at all.
The other POVs further the plot more than the main characters.

Good story line, getting a little preachy but still good adventures to be had!
My least favorite of the series so far. But still a good read
If you really love sermons, paper thin plots, and wholly unlikeable characters, you'll love this installment of the series. I could find something to love in each of the previous books, but I found no such redeeming qualities in this book, except maybe the return of Chase and Rachel towards the very end. The action in Naked Empire is fairly linear and limited; there are chapters that consist almost entirely of either Richard or some Bandakarian proselytizing.
