I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you for the opportunity. What a wonderful style. The author presents the story with short scenes and covers many characters and points of view. It has a great mood with the right balance between violence and humor. It's exciting and clever. The same way the books by Thornton W. Burgess kept me turning page after page as a child, War Bunny kept me glued to this dystopia.

Quite simply one of my favorite books of the year so far. A very different take on apocalyptic fiction. Humans (known as the Dead Gods) are gone and now it’s just a handful of animal species.

One of the things that I liked the best is that while the story centers on the rabbits, we also get parts of the story from the POV of the other species in the Million Acre Wood. This aspect reminded me of the adage that in a predator vs prey scene in a nature documentary, who you’re rooting for depends on who the documentary is about.

The characters are vividly drawn and the dialog is often laugh out loud amusing. But there are also plenty of deeper themes to think about as well. There is going to be a sequel (and I can’t wait) but unlike some series, this felt like a fairly complete story on its own.

I received this as part of a Goodreads Giveaway and appreciate that I had the chance to read it. This was an enjoyable book that is entertaining on the surface but also has some deep meaning if you want to look for it. If you don’t, you’re still treated to a book with interesting animal characters and a fair amount of world-building. For some, that would be more than enough to make this a good book. Beyond that, this book has some great messages about hidden potential and breaking free from society’s norms and expectations. There’s even more to the book (some of which I probably missed) if you want to continue exploring its meaning. 3.5 stars from me (which means I liked it! I rate on the low end). Thanks again to Goodreads and the author!

Amazingly unique

I absolutely adored this book!
It has everything I need.
Great characters, fluffy critters, world building, and a unique story line.
Seriously, I've read a ton, nothing like this though. Very easy to get hooked!

So... War Bunny is kind of what would happen if someone took Watership Down and Redwall together, added Joan of Arc (as a rabbit, obviously), set it in a post-apocalyptic North American (? I think?), and then wrote it the way we actually speak day-to-day, including phrases like "dude." And somehow this super worked for me?

I'm not sure how to review this except to say that if that sounds interesting, definitely give it a shot.  I've been trying to explain the predator vs prey storyline and the world building to my girlfriend and just confusing her further, though she's also intrigued.

Watership Down is my favorite book in the world, and nothing will ever match it, but this has to be coming from someone who also loved Watership Down and decided to go somewhere very very different with the basic ideas there, and I can't wait to see where it goes next.
