I really enjoyed these collections of short stories. Each has a very unique world with it’s own set of rules and nature, but often shares something with our own reality. Creating worlds that abide by different rules lets the author ask some fascinating questions about human behavior - each story left me thinking “what would I have done?” for days afterwards. I love stories that stick with me and make me think.

Reading Chiang’s stories reminds me a lot of reading Borges. If you want to, it is easy to just enjoy them for the stories themselves. But each story centers on some kind of philosophical or moral puzzle. To read the story is to journey along with Chiang as he works through the puzzle and explores its various dimensions. And of course it doesn’t hurt that the stories are also about fun things like time travel, parallel universes, and adorable virtual pets.
