I only finished this book because I'm incapable of starting a book and not finishing it. It was a horrific slog, to be honest. The writing style is terrible, the characters are generally uninteresting, and the same thing happens repeatedly, rinse and repeat... Our hero is in danger, he gets captured, he escapes. About 15 times. All for a woman who isn't even interested in him and then basically disappears halfway through the book for no reason. The sheer number of characters and places introduced is absurd, all with complex names, most of which are completely irrelevant to the story for more than a few pages. The system of magic is inconsistent, and seems to have few to no rules which establish how it works. I really cannot recommend this book to anyone.

If you came from the witcher series and you're looking for something new but with the same atmosphere, this is it.
The story feels very natural and it captures an interesting time where faith was very divided. It takes us to the horrors of the inquisition and it shows how it's sometimes better to keep your mouth shut and run.
I really liked this book and my words cannot describe how great it is. So I won't, just read it!

Could not get into this. Just pages and pages of 15th century history, names and places and events, some plot sprinkled in here and there.

Przez pierwsze 200 stron bardzo mi się ta książka podobała. Potem było gorzej. Reynevan uganiający się za Adelą po całym Śląsku do pewnego momentu był uroczy, ależ ileż można. Chłopina i jego wesoła kompania przez pół książki kręcili się jak przysłowiowe g..no w betoniarce – a to ktoś ich łapał, a to się uwalniali, a to ktoś im pomagał, a to ściągali na siebie nowe problemy, ktoś ich łapał, uwalniali się… środek dłużył mi się straszliwie. Na szczęście ostatnie 100 stron uratowało sytuację, co prawda daleko poza schemat nie wychodząc, ale jednak wprowadzając jakieś urozmaicenie i popychając akcję na przód.
Nie wiem, czy to dziwne, ale fragmenty historyczne podobały mi się znacznie bardziej od tych magicznych. To znaczy tak – Reynevan rzucający zaklęcia był świetny, lubię takie rzeczy, mieszanki ziół o magicznych właściwościach, nawiązy i egzorcyzmy (Samson Miodek jest moim zdecydowanym ulubieńcem). Ale te wszystkie stwory? Ten sabat czarownic? Nudziło mnie to i denerwowało. Chętniej czytałam o husytach, biskupach i książętach. O walce za wiarę, układach i koneksjach. Urządzam więc pewnie jakąś brzydką projekcję, dochodząc do wniosku, że bardziej by mi się Narrenturm podobało, gdyby było o połowę krótsze, pozbawione połowy magicznych rzeczy i bardziej skupiało się na głównym wątku. Ale wtedy byłoby inną książką.

Idziemy na Czechy!
