I couldn't put it down (or turn it off, since I "read" this via audiobook). There were a couple of things I wasn't crazy about but they were negligible, considering.

An excellent first volume. Tightly written, with some stand out scenes and compelling characters. Works well as a stand-alone novel whilst having enough unresolved mystery to draw me back for more. Great world-building, though a lot of it remains on the periphery as, in this volume, the storylines retain a more personal focus. There is a clear intimation that a larger, more epic, storyline will come centre stage in the next book, and Brian Staveley certainly gives you the feeling that you are in good hands.

Captured my rapt attention pretty much the whole way through. Good audiobook narrator. I’ll be listening to the rest of the trilogy.

Well that was addicting! I can't wait for more!

I FINISHED THIS AND I HAVE THOUGHTS WHICH IS LIKE WAY BETTER WHEN I FINISH A BOOK AND I HAVE NO THOUGHTS SO LETS HEAR THEM.
This book was good. Definitely get why ppl compare it to First Law but according to me totally different.
First I want to thank the narrator Steven Pacey for such amazing narration and bringing the book and the characters to life. No one alive holds a candle to you my man.( I am absolutely going to butcher spelling bcoz I read this on audio)
The basic premise of book is the emperor is dead and we are following the stories of his kids. 2 sons and 1 daughter.
1 son- Kaden training to be a monk and he is the heir bcoz he has golden eyes.
His arc was interesting I liked the teachers and his friends.
2 son-Valyn - my fav arc kind of a detective mystery to find out why he is getting attacked and who is killing ppl off.Loved his development and the whole squad
Daughter -Adree - Considering she's one of the main characters there were definitely not enough moments with her. The gap in chapters was so long I kept forgetting stuff and I cant just go back to her chapter. But the politics is interesting I hope she plays a big part in the next series.

Overall- a very solid fantasy book. There is magic here with magic creatures and races. I cant wait to see what the characters get up to and what they face

this was very average. the plotline i looked forward to the most based on the synopsis was the shortest one, and very rushed. this book promised me a princess navigating a dangerous political game but i got like 7 chapters of her mostly being an idiot and not doing her job as minister even though she wants to prove the men who look down on her for being a woman wrong, barely any politics, and her randomly kissing the regent of the throne she just met because he showed her a tiny bit of "respect" (after the book established she had some bitterness over never being able to take the throne or at least be regent despite being the oldest and having the goddess's eyes). the already dull kaden destroyed his "self" and now doesn't have emotions making him MORE dull *flashbacks to bran stark*. valyn had the best chapters because solider training and trails are a classic fun time but none of the 3 were standout characters, i'll forget all of them soon enough. the whole "evil creatures coming back into the world" plot is very cliché but some authors can make it interesting... not this time. all the twist were obvious too. overall i had some mindless fun here but i'm not so sure i'm picking up the next one.

I liked the plot a lot and I'm curious to know the rest of the story but there were moments the character annoyed me so much with their failures over and over again that I wanted to kill them my self...
