Unlike most readers I didn't find the first book of the "Fruits Basket" manga amazing. It wasn't bad, but I did had a few issues with it. The main character way too happy for my taste. In every scene she's in she's always cheeful amd smiling. It's nice to have a character that doesn't have a personality of a rock, but her attitude could've been tone down just a little bit. The whole book itself felt more of a filler. There really wasn't a story. I know it's suppose to be a introduction and the author wanted us to get to know the characters, but you can still tell a story while introducing the main characters. As I continued to read on I felt like I was readng fanfiction than an actual manga. I also thought it was a little corny at times. Despite it's silliness, the characters were interesting in their on way. I will read the rest of the books, hopefully they will get better.

I've been hesitant for years to pick this series up--it's received a ton of rave reviews from all over the place, and has been probably the most popular shoujo manga to make it to America. I'm always pretty cautious about reading things that are insanely popular due to often being let down, so it usually takes me a while to drum up the will to do so.
Definitely not a disappointment! I was happy to see this isn't exactly a romantic comedy like I was led to believe--there's certainly some comedic and romantic elements in it, but at the core it's more about friendship and family. There's a lot of goofy action when she hugs the main male characters in here (who turn into animals when a female hugs them), but overall it had some really nice themes of family going on that it didn't feel like it was just being silly.

i’ll never truly understand the hype for this series. there is a term for people who share the same last name, are in the same family, and still pursue romantic relationships with each other.
