Great book, very in-depth bits on fighting and some military specifics so the research must have been extensive. Really enjoyed following the different characters just as much as in Pillars of the Earth (maybe more), and nice to have history told from those positions on both sides of the war and those at home. Read quicker than I expected!
It was wonderful! There were some parts I skimmed because I found them kind of boring; the parts about the fighting. But overall, it was a really good book.
Fascinating book. It gives a good sketch of the moods and main events leading up to and during WWI. It might have benefited from trying to cover less: I found myself interested in some of the characters more than others, but more than that, I feel that the early suggestion of in depth connection to the characters was never fulfilled. The main American character, Gus, was obviously there to simply have an American view point, but he never quite connected or felt like more than a tool, in my opinion. One of the Russian characters, Lev, had potential, but was addressed too little to live up to it.
All in all, the book was a bit uneven. But, I enjoyed it immensely and will definitely read the next book in the series.

At times a bit more verbose than necessary, with the length of the novel a bit daunting. Overall Fall of Giants was a delightful read, and I look forward to Book Two.
Any book that can keep me up past 1 AM must be good. Follett has a great way of making history come alive and allowing me to sympathize with nearly every perspective of major events. Nothing seems overly simplified or sugar coated. Can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
I really enjoyed this saga of 5 families through the First World War. Most of the action takes place in Europe with the English, German, Russian, and Welsh families. The characters for the most part were sympathetic and entertaining. What I really liked was the Follett resisted the need to kill off the main characters, which really was nice of him. Though over a 1000 pages, it was an enjoyable beach read as it covered the character's involvement in the war, labor movement, and women's right to vote.
I loved the start of this book, especially the emotionally moving parts about working down the coal mines. After that it just got a little tedious for me.
Maybe if this was shorter and faster paced, I might have found it easier to digest.
