So glad to be an only child…

I kind of predicted a plot point but some parts had me gagggeeed, honestly finished this in 2 days I couldn’t put it down. So worth it?

I wouldn’t say I loved any character tbh, some are tragic some are overwhelmingly antagonistic but that’s the point I suppose..?

Personally the plot is so rich and the writing is so easy and well done. The story isn’t as disturbing and deplorable as the other reviews said tbh, it’s just.. a fucked up story…? Maybe I’m desensitized idek but this is one of those books that you remember on a random Tuesday afternoon.

This is what I call ‘heavy’ horror (irl, sad, grief, tragic type stuff). I think I went in thinking this would be unhinged, sheltered, inbred cannibal family across the board…almost as if it’s all they ever knew and were kinda close and thought it was all normal and we’re a fly on the wall watching how they live their day to day life with hits of body and food horror. Instead it’s so sad. We have a main character who has had almost every single terrible thing that can happen to someone thrown at him since childhood. And there was so much emotional, mental, and physical torture within the family, especially between the brothers. Great writing, definitely captures the scene and horrors, but it’s all so tragic, sad, heavy, and deep that it just wasn’t for me.

Quite a disturbing read. Great overall because it was indeed a thriller, more-so a horror.

It was dragging on and wasn’t maintaining my interest. I didn’t care for the characters much.

I expected to like this book more, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it at all.

My main issue with this book was that it was boring, which was the last critique I thought I was going to have of it going into it initially. The manic pixie dream girl working at the record store ending up with the sad tormented gorgeous but socially maladjusted weirdo with long hair would have made seventeen year old me swoon but now it's just a bit played out.

The book itself is written well and the twists are there, they are just a bit predictable. I think the "biggest" twist is revealed (potentially, depending on if you notice it or not) way too soon and it gives the reader too much time to put the pieces together for them really to have any massive impact. The ideas are there, and they are twisted in the best possible way, but overall it was just a bit bland for me which is a big statement to make considering the subject matter.

I love AA and just wish she'd gone tooth and nail with this one and really messed us up. Getting blue balled by this book was such a disappointment but it was still a decent read and I'm sure it had the desired effect on many people, unfortunately it needed a bit more for me to remember or recommend it.
