Lord of Shadows is book two of the Dark Artifices Trilogy by Cassandra Clare, an author that I go back and forth with constantly.
I love some of her books (The Infernal Devices Trilogy), I don’t love some of her books (Lady Midnight, City of Fallen Angels). It’s a complicated relationship. I feel like for most of her books, I’m only halfway on for the ride, and then towards the end, I’m slammed with a good, intriguing ending and then I’m hooked, so I go to the next book, and it’s the same cycle over and over (again, except for The Infernal Devices, that just is a whole different magical moment).
I did enjoy Lord of Shadows more than I did Lady Midnight, for sure. Now that the characters are more established, I found the story to flow a bit better.
However.
This book is *massive*. Too massive, for the plot that it contains. I think this could have easily been condensed and tightened up, and been for a better reading experience.
But I’ll still say, even with it’s massiveness, I still enjoyed it. I listened to this almost entirely (95%) on Audiobook on my drive to and from work, and by the end, I felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend.
I think if you thought Lady Midnight was just okay, and like me, were considering whether to continue with the series or not, I’d say go for it. I do think it’s worth the read if you like this world and the characters.
