I want to love this series so much. Maybe I'm just reading it at the wrong time in my life. But these characters and their stories are so...sad. It's frustrating to watch Zélie and Amari make the same mistakes time and time again with seemingly no lessons learned. There's constant sorrow and suffering, and the few moments of joy feel unearned and tense. I understand there's a war going on, but Jesus Christ, let them breathe for a moment.

I'm not sure about this sequel...
My main problems are that
1.
every little fight is supposed to be the "end of the war", "now we won everything" or "now nothing can be saved anymore"
and
2. the unnecessary tension between
Zélie and Inan: Yes, he betrayed her once (which was the only thing I really struggled with in the first book, because it seemed way out of character). But this whole book Inan's trying to convince Zélie he's on her side, and she's just ignorant about it.

I was so so so so looking forward to this book, and it’s possible that the anticipation is part of the problem. My first disappointment was simply in its length. I’m so used to fantasy books getting longer as the series progresses, or at least staying the same length. Spoiled me felt a little cheated when I opened the box it came in. Then the back and forth constant love interest nonsense. Why why why does it so dominate the story?!? For a while it felt like every chapter. The first book was so rich. I’m sorry to say I’m disappointed in this one.

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

Partially dropped due to mood, but not likely to pick it up again.

National scenario is much worse at the beginning of this book than at the end of the first one, everything is falling apart and the MC children are crying and desperate and squabbling, everything seems hopeless. One MC discovers a little bit of courage/determination and announces her plan to fight back. The others say 'but how, we're absurdly outmatched by [bad guy] and we just lost our supporting mercenaries, it is impossible for us to fight.' and so MC says "I'll end it " and that's her dang plan.
