The best series opener for SJM thus far! I commend her for writing an incredibly unique world for this convulsed story to take place in. The political intrigue, the mystery that kept getting more and more complicated, and the flawed but lovable characters makes this a page turner. She takes risks when deciding character’s fates which is a huge difference from her other two series! HOEAB had lots of twists to unravel, but even the slow moments didn’t feel like the book dragged. Incredibly excited to see where this story goes!

"Through love, all is possible."

"Message me when you're home safe."
"I'm home."

When I read Sarah J. Maas, I'm not looking for life-long messages that will have me thinking about my place in the universe and the meaning of love. But this book did exactly that.

However, I will admit that this is a very hesitant 5/5 rating. Not only do I think I'm a little to exuberant with the rating but I will admit that the book starts really slow due to a lot of world-building and that I nearly DNF'D the book about 120 pages from the ending due to an incident with a dog-like character.

The ending though will take you through a rollercoaster of emotion and make sure you have a good few hours just to read as I was at work when the biggest plot twist came down and was reading between errands and could not put the book down.

Onward to the last book of this 15 long charade until January.

This is the best book SJM has written! I loved all of it. I really loved how SJM portrayed deep grief and friendship. The ending killed me though.

I’m all over the place when it comes to how much I actually liked this book. I was I initially pissed off with the first 100 pages of the book
like why introduce us to all these characters just to immediately kill them off? We don’t even have enough time to fall in love or hate with them before they’re dead and Bryce is grieving. Also, I was annoyed with the introduction of a would be kick ass squad to then have the entire Pack of Devils be killed. Genuinely WTF. (I’ve read 700 pages since this and I’m still reeling)
. It wasn’t until things really started to pick up between Bryce and Hunt that I started to find a medium amount of enjoyment in the book. This all being said the last 100-200 pages had be hooked, and then absolutely destroyed. Balled my eyes out of so long.

I read this book for the first time almost exactly two years ago—and then proceeded to forget everything that happened in it. So I did a quick reread so I could continue the series.

This book fell victim to one of SJM’s favorite way of conveying plot twists: long ass unnecessary monologues. The plot itself was interesting enough to me, with some twists and reveals that weren’t TOO obvious.

I’m not usually a big fan of urban fantasy (it’s goofy to me when the fae are communicating to each other over text—pls keep them in high fantasy settings) but it was still enjoyable.

Writing: 4⭐️/5
The writing is solid throughout the novel. At points, the writing really shined through, but I found it very hard to parse the novel at the beginning. In fact, the first fifty pages (give or take ten to twenty) felt almost unedited. The grammar and spelling were fine, but the info dumps on every other page lent a sort of unpolished feeling to the opening.

Characters: 4⭐️/5
I felt the characters often had their own identities, even as I noticed a few similarities here or there with characters in her other novels. I found myself liking, agreeing with, and understanding their motives and perspectives. A couple of times, I did feel like they acted incredibly out of character, but it didn’t necessarily take away from the fun of the novel.

Plot: 4⭐️/5
The plot was fun – even with a couple of holes that I wish had been finessed further. I enjoyed reading about the mystery and the romance plot once I got into the novel. Again, the information dump that was the first portion of the novel did take away from this enjoyment.

Who Should Read This Book?
  • Sarah J. Maas fans
  • Fans of urban fantasy looking for a fun read with a hint of spice
  • Readers who like romance-heavy novels that still have interesting plots

Content Warnings?
  • Sexual content, sexual harassment, death, injury, animal cruelty, drug use, alcohol use, death of a friend, murder, gore, blood, vomit, gun violence, sexism

Post-Reading Rating:  4⭐️/5
I enjoyed it enough to say I’ll read the next one for sure!

Final Rating: 4⭐️/5
