Writing: 4⭐️/5
The writing is solid throughout the novel. At points, the writing really shined through, but I found it very hard to parse the novel at the beginning. In fact, the first fifty pages (give or take ten to twenty) felt almost unedited. The grammar and spelling were fine, but the info dumps on every other page lent a sort of unpolished feeling to the opening.

Characters: 4⭐️/5
I felt the characters often had their own identities, even as I noticed a few similarities here or there with characters in her other novels. I found myself liking, agreeing with, and understanding their motives and perspectives. A couple of times, I did feel like they acted incredibly out of character, but it didn’t necessarily take away from the fun of the novel.

Plot: 4⭐️/5
The plot was fun – even with a couple of holes that I wish had been finessed further. I enjoyed reading about the mystery and the romance plot once I got into the novel. Again, the information dump that was the first portion of the novel did take away from this enjoyment.

Who Should Read This Book?
  • Sarah J. Maas fans
  • Fans of urban fantasy looking for a fun read with a hint of spice
  • Readers who like romance-heavy novels that still have interesting plots

Content Warnings?
  • Sexual content, sexual harassment, death, injury, animal cruelty, drug use, alcohol use, death of a friend, murder, gore, blood, vomit, gun violence, sexism

Post-Reading Rating:  4⭐️/5
I enjoyed it enough to say I’ll read the next one for sure!

Final Rating: 4⭐️/5

Holy Gods, if I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. This is my new favorite book by a landslide. You know its a good book when you forget to tab the last 150 pages because you were grasping onto everything the book was throwing your way. I have never felt such an emotional and deep connection to inked words on a page before, and this is the first time I have ever held my breath while reading a passage. If anyone has any idea on how to emotionally process ths is novel, please, its going to take me weeks.
At some points the plot felt a little rushed, and some information was hard to keep track of, but regardless, I'm in love.

80% of the book is 5 stars. Small deduction because the exposition is very slow so it was hard for me to get past that to where it started moving.

Idk why it had to be 800 pages… honestly looked up spoilers to keep myself engaged.

I requested this from the library after seeing everyone going crazy over the second book in the series, and it only took me a few days to read when it became available despite it being super long- there was so much happening and I didn't want to put it down!

I liked how complex and varied this fantasy universe was, but I wish there had been just a few types of magical creatures rather than literally every type (angels, werewolves, mermaids, fae, vampires, demons, sprites, witches, fauns, wraiths, etc... plus humans, and that isn't even all!). It was interesting to see how their society worked with all of that different magic, despite like the entire foundation of their social structure being built on hierarchies and slavery- big trigger warning there.

I enjoyed most of the characters and felt that even the side characters had some depth to them, and I looked forward to each different perspective. There were a lot of shocking reveals and they had me questioning some of my favorites at some points, but it kept me on my toes for sure!

As for the main characters- I'm sorry but Bryce is a HORRIBLE name for a half human/half fae leading heroine and I kind of didn't like how she was always ~sexy and perfect~ but she was very strong, confident, and brave, so we love her! She really went through a lot by the end and she deserves some happiness, my god, so I am a little scared to read the next book. Hunt is another horrible name for a character, but I also really enjoyed his development, although his story was SAD, folks. The romance was also pretty good, definitely a slowwww burn if you are into that and not cringey at all. There was way more focus on the overall plot rather than the romance, so if you are searching for a more romantic/sexy book then this probably won't be for you.

Overall, this was a nice read and it had a lot going on and lots of twists, so definitely kept my interest until the end and had my emotions all over the place as well.
