I didn't enjoy the rambling descriptions that this book had, so I didn't want to continue reading.

It will be hard for me to find the words to describe why I loved this book. But, this was my favorite read of January. I escaped into Oak Hollow and Brida's world and did not want to escape. The magic, the folklore, the adventure, and the mystery kept me reading. If you are looking for a good fantasy, look no further. This book might be lengthy, but it holds you in its grip all the way through.

Another delightful middle grade fantasy debut to add to your TBR right now.

Once a land of prosperity and happiness, Fenwood Reach has been overcome by dark magic, after the last powerful Windwitch was driven from the land. In the small village of Oak Hollow, Brida, the hedgewitch’s apprentice, struggles to make her magic work as it’s meant to and manages to make a mistake that will change the course of her life-she catches the attention of the evil queen. As she runs from the queen’s huntsman and her all-seeing murder of crows, Brida begins to unlock the clues of her family, her magic, and who she is destined to be. With this knowledge will she be able to save those she loves and restore the magic in the land she lives in?
You’ll have to read it to find out.

This book contains all of my favorite middle grade fantasy attributes- magic rooted in nature, a brave young female protagonist, fantastical beasts, and a villain with imagination and a sense of humor.
During her journey, Brida discovers new villages and cities in what feels like an epic magical world, each different setting breathing new life into the story. Atmospheric and engrossing, Fenwood Reach also contains an eclectic group of characters both lovable and despicable you won’t soon forget. I also really enjoyed that this realm is deeply enriched with storytelling. This book is a great example which demonstrates that, in a world of good versus of evil, it’s our choices that determine our destiny.

Whether reading aloud to the family or a quiet evening in with a never ending bowl of ice cream, The Last Windwitch by @jenniferfadam is a book I’m sure you will enjoy.

Thank you @netgalley and @harpercollinsch for the opportunity to read and review this book.

A lovely tale of a young hedge witch apprentice named Brida that find herself in the center of a struggle between the evil witch of crows and nature itself. Although Brida has always felt like she has failed as a hedge witch apprentice, she begins to discover that there may be more to her magic and her past than she ever realized.

The Last Windwitch builds a beautiful world of magic in The Last Windwitch. The lore is smoothly built into the story and we learn more as we read through the story. The world is slowly built so it never feels like a narrative world building dump on the reader. The characters all complex, but still fit into this fairytale/middle grade story.

My only complaint was that the ending could have been stretched out a bit. It felt a tad bit rushed. But it was still enjoyable. Overall, I would give this story 4.5/5.

I wish this book didn’t have to end! Almost 450 pages, and I’d still be happy to read more!

The Last Windwitch is a beautifully written coming-of-age middle grade fantasy by Jennifer Adam. Released 13th April 2021 by HarperCollins, it's 448 pages and is available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

Although it's relatively long for a middle grade reader book, the story is so engaging and immersive, and the narrative moves along so quickly that the reader is drawn along. I enjoyed Brida's story and the way the author builds up the world (including the animal characters and magical aspects). Even though this is a self-contained and complete story, I really hope the author has more stories for us in this world. The dialogue flows very well and the characters really seemed three dimensional and believable.

Five stars. This story has really stayed with me. I would recommend it for public or school library acquisition, readers of all-ages fantasy, and speculative fiction. I *sincerely* hope this one is a prime pick when next year's Nebula nominations roll around (yes, it really is that good).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
